Top 10 Games of the season: #6

March 30, 2008

The #6 game of the season was The Bobcats revenge against Sacred Heart. After suffering their first NEC loss 92-82 to the Pioneers on January 26 at the Pitt Center, the team basically had the rematch circled on their calendars for the next month.

      59                             48

On February 23, QU exacted revenge in front of the largest crowd of the season and earned a 59-48 win at TDBNSC…on Senior Day nonetheless.

Erin Kerner and Mandy Pennewell each had 17 points to lead us in scoring, and Senior Nicole Duperron had 13 points and 13 rebounds down low on her Senior Day. Sacred Heart’s Kaitlin Sowinski was held to just 12 points, after scoring 33 vs. the Bobcats the first time around.

        68                  51

The 68-51 victory gave Quinnipiac their first ever NEC Regular Season championship, and an automatic birth into the NITErin Kerner led the Bobcats (surprise, surprise) with 20 points while Mandy Pennewell chipped in 16 of her own.

Top 10 Games of the season: #8

March 26, 2008

The #8 game of the season took place some 3000 miles away in San Diego, California. Though the Bobcats lost the Surf n’ Slam Championship game to Seton Hall, the game was a captivating one.

          64                    69

Without star guard Erin Kerner playing, QU played the Big East team tough and overcame a 12 point deficit to force overtime. Monique Lee, Brianna Rooney and Mandy Pennewell each had 17 points apiece to lead the offense. They eventually fell 69-64.

The loss was tough to take, but it helped boost the confidence of the team heading into conference play…and it showed with their 14-2 NEC record this season.

Top 10 Games of the season: #9

March 25, 2008

In continuing with my Top 10 games of the season for the Bobcats, at #9 is the Marathon trip to Maryland.

      68                       57

After an 8 hour bus ride to Emmitsburg, M.D. (thanks to NYC traffic) and Coach Fabbri being sick as a dog and recruiting in Virginia the night before, a tired but inspired Bobcats team beat Mount St. Mary’s 68-57 at Knott Arena on February 16.

With the win, QU improved to 20-3 overall on the season…the ride back was much quicker.

Bobcats’ historic season ends in defeat

March 20, 2008

        59                  71

The Quinnipiac Bobcats were defeated by the Iona Gaels 71-59 at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in the first round of the Women’s NIT.

Basically, QU was simply overmatched, and injuries definitely took their toll on the team after a long season. Courtney Kaminski was unable to go because a sore ankle, and Erin Kerner left the game in the second half and could not return.

The Bobcats emptied their bench, but just could not muster up enough to stay with Iona. QU got it to within 9 at a couple of times in the second half, but Iona held a strong lead for the entire game.

Erin had 14, while Mandy Pennewell had 15 points leading the scoring for the Bobcats.

This unfortunately marks is the end of a historic season for QU Basketball, but there is a lot to be proud of! A school record for wins in a season, and the first postseason game in the history of basketball at Quinnipiac.

Back to Work

March 15, 2008

The Bobcats got back to practicing yesterday in preparation for the Women’s NIT.

Coach Fabbri put the team through the hardest practices in a while, and there’s no question that the team is still focused on winning in the postseason, even if it’s not in the NCAA tournament.

As for who QU plays in the first round, the NIT bracket will be revealed after the NCAA selection show on Monday night. The Bobcats first round matchup will most likely be on Wednesday.

Season Stats

The NEC champion, who receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament will be decided tomorrow. The #2 seed Robert Morris hosts the #4 seed LIU tomorrow at 3 p.m., televised on ESPNU.

Bobcats Go Down Fighting Till The End

March 10, 2008

     63             67

It really was an emotionally overwhelming day for the QU women’s basketball team, as they were eliminated from the NEC Tournament by the host team, LIU in the seminfinals today. The final was 67-63.

Where do I start? Well, Sophomore Courtney Kaminski unfortunately went down in the first half after rolling her ankle, and she was unable to return. Monique Lee was out for today’s game with potentially a second torn ACL that was suffered in yesterday’s win over The Mount.

ERIN…WOW! Erin Kerner was unbelievable, unconscious, unstoppable, tough, gritty and fierce all game, as she practically took the Bobcats on her back and scored a career-high 37 points, connecting on 14 of 26 shots.

Playing with basically 6 players being rotated throughout the game, bench players Krystal Lazos and Kathleen Neyens stepped up in a major way. Lazos played fantastic defense, and dropped 12 points, while “Lenner” ripped down 11 rebounds.

I could complain about the refs in detail, who missed several calls late in the game, but I’m gonna keep it positive. The Bobcats left EVERYTHING out there for this game, and you can’t fault that.

The consulation to this loss is that this is not the end of the road for this year’s team! Since we won the regular season NEC title, that equals an automatic bid into the Women’s NIT. The bracket will be unveiled after the NCAA selection show next Monday night, and the team will get back to practice this Thursday.

LIU moves on to face Robert Morris in the NEC Championship game next Sunday.
